EL to celebrate Flekkefest

Flekkefest is an event that prides itself on the area’s heritage, with the festival and town of Elbow Lake celebrating its 125th year.

The festival’s name comes from the local lake Flekkefjord, renamed by immigrants from Norway, according to festival Chair Missy Myron-Rustan. “There’s Scandinavian food vendors during the Taste of Scandinavia and Flekke-Feast, with 13 plus food vendors in the park, as well as the trolls,” she said.

The trolls are the mascots of the festival, and they make appearances throughout the weekend, Friday Aug. 3 to Sunday, Aug. 5. Other weekend-long events include rummage sales, European Kaffe Haus, Farmer’s Market, a corn maze, and plenty of food, art, and craft vendors, located on the courthouse lawn.

“Friday is the Flekkefest idol, a singing competition that is open to everybody, as well as the huge Flekke-Feast in Veterans Park.” The feast begins at 5 p.m., and the idol competition at 6 p.m. Fireworks will light up lake Flekkefjord, and dances to 57 Chevy and Sweet Siren will act as conclusions to the night.

Saturday is packed full of all the summer festival staples — a 5K run/walk at 8 a.m., softball tourney, pancake breakfast, classic car show at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., live entertainment, and a parade at 6 p.m.

“The U of M band will be performing in the parade, and will also be having clinics for kids on Saturday,” said Myron-Rustan. “Games Galore will be there with five huge inflatables for the kids.”

Live entertainment for the day includes a Neil Diamond impersonator at 11 a.m., band Doc’s All Stars, and a teen, adult, and firemen’s dance featuring an Elbow Lake native Tim Melin in the band Trip Wire.

Sunday is the close of the festival, with softball tournament finals, a community church service at 10 a.m., arts and crafts show, an Elbow Lake Lions fish fry from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the 125th anniversary program. Come and help the community celebrate.
