‘Jackets outlast Vikings [UPDATED]Published 5:41am Sunday, September 2, 2012 Updated 5:42am Tuesday, September 4, 2012
PELICAN RAPIDS — The Perham Yellowjackets were able to get payback for last season’s one point opening week loss as they handed the Pelican Rapids Vikings a 21-14 home loss Friday.
The Yellowjackets got on the board first as Josh Still juked and weaved his way to the end zone on the opening kickoff.
The Vikings did not let that get them down as they marched over 60 yards inside the Perham red zone. Speedy tailback Carolos Guttierrez finished the drive with a three yard rushing touchdown to tie the game up at seven a piece. The momentum felt like it shifted to the home team as bobbled handoff led to Perham turnover on the next possession.
The Vikings were poised to take advantage of the turnover, but quarterback Devin Schell went down with a ankle injury after a first down run.
This turned the tide as the Yellowjackets’ next possession finished with a Payton Jordahl one yard touchdown run.
Perham would add another score before half as quarterback Jordan Hein found wide receiver C.J. Mulcahy for a 39 yard touchdown pass.
Opening the second half, neither team could move the ball against the other’s defense as the third quarter ended the way it started.
The Vikings were not out of the game as backup signal caller Devon Hensch kept composed and helped lead the team down field. Guttierrez finished the drive with a 10 yard scamper to pay dirt.
Pelican found themselves with the ball across the Perham 30 yard line with a minute to play, but the ‘Jacket defense stepped up and closed the game out for a win.
“Both teams played well offensively for a season opening game,” Vikings coach Dave Haugen said. “I was very pleased with the effort that our guys played with and the way that we kept battling despite being behind.”
The Yellowjackets will head home for their second game as they host Park Rapids Area Friday at 7 p.m., while the Vikings will look to get back on track as they travel to take on Breckenridge Friday at 7 p.m.
