ST. CLOUD – The Fergus Falls Hurricanes’ season ended over the weekend as they were defeated by the Maple Lake Lakers 4-3 in the semi-final round of the Class C state tournament.
The ‘Canes started the weekend holding onto a 5-4 victory over the Milroy Yankees.
Fergus scored its first run on a throwing error in attempt to catch the speedy Bryan Jacklitch at third, but the ball skipped into left letting Jacklitch walk into home.
Milroy responded in the fourth, but the ‘Canes bats were hot in the top of the fifth as they scored four runs on key hits by Alex Hensch, Dan Revering and Casey Kowalski.
The Yankees nearly got back into the game in the sixth as they knocked in three runs, but pitcher Brock Collins was able to shutdown the home team for the remaining three innings to pick up the win.
Fergus moved on to a Sunday matchup against the Lastrup Lakers, which saw the ‘Canes come up clutch in the eighth inning to take a 3-1 victory.
The first run of the game was similar to the ‘Canes last game as Jacklitch was able to score the first run on an wild pitch at the plate in the sixth.
The Lakers would tie it up in the bottom half, but Fergus would put it away with two runs in the eighth for the win.
This setup a matchup with the Maple Lake Lakers.
The ‘Canes gained an early advantage on the Lakers 3-0 after four inning.
Maple Lake was able to rebound in the fifth as they knotted the game up at three a piece.
The ‘Canes were unable to hold off the Lakers as a sacrafice plated the winning run in the seventh.
The ‘Canes finish the season with a 28-8 record.
