HIBBING — The NJCAA National Champion M State Spartans stepped on the Mesabi Country Club course ready to defend their title.

After the round had been played, M State walked away with a win and Spartan golfer Lucas Gervais took home medalist honors.

The Spartans shot a team score of 325, followed by Mesabi Range CC (335) and Hibbing CC (343).

Gervais (76) shot the top score individually, while Mesabi’s Olaf Walkky (77), Matt Kesanen (78) and teammate Taylor Shuck (78) rounded out the top three.

“It was clear that we had some Freshman jitters as we struggled throughout the day to keep the ball in play,” Spartans’ coach Jason Retzlaff said. “We showed signs of some very good play but need to avoid the big mistakes. I think we will see continued improvement as our Freshman get more experience.”

The Spartans will now travel to Biwabik Sunday to compete in the Mesabi Invite, a two-day tournament, at Giant’s Ridge.
