PELICAN RAPIDS — The Viking volleyball team welcomed in five visiting teams and came away with the tournament title Saturday afternoon.

The tournament was setup in a round robin, where teams get a point per set win and the winner is decided after all game play has ceased.

The Vikings started the day against the Rothsay Tigers. Defending their home court, Pelican Rapids was able to take two sets 25-14, 25-17.

In their second game, the Viking girls saw the tale of two sets as they split with New York Mills 18-25, 25-8.

With a long break between, Pelican Rapids would take another split with Battle Lake, losing the opening set 23-25, but taking set two 25-19.

Next opponent for the home team was the Hillcrest Comets. The Vikings were able to use an uptempo style of play and took both sets 25-13, 25-13.

The Vikings last match would decide if they took home the trophy or stood by as the runner-up as they took on Lake Park-Audubon.

In two tough sets, the Vikings were able to take both to edge out New York Mills for the tournament gold.

“Madison Korf made some great setting choices to try to keep it out of their big blocker’s hands in the last game,” Vikings coach Heidi Isaman said. “Alyssa Huseby hit the ball very well and used the block to her advantage.”

The Vikings will look to continue their good fortune as they host Detroit Lakes Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
