Mary Westman, formerly of Henning, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Heartland Pioneer Cottage in Fergus Falls.

Mary Irene Korp was born on April 27, 1922, in Omaha, Neb. Her parents were the late Otto Sr. and Esther (Lee) Korp. She was the oldest of four children. She graduated from Technical High School in Omaha with the Class of 1940.

On Sept. 4, 1943, Mary married Cloyde “Tommy” Thompson in Omaha. Their marriage was blessed with four children. In the early years Mary was a homemaker, raising her children, while her husband served in the United States Army. She sewed her children’s clothes, and did a lot of knitting and crocheting. They moved from New Mexico to Battle Lake, where they operated the Napinee Resort near Clitherall.

On Oct. 17, 1963, Tommy died.

Mary later married Edsel Westman on April 12, 1966. They resided and worked at the resort for a short time and then moved to a farm near Urbank, where they had milk cows, pigs, geese and Mary’s favorite, horses. After their divorce in 1981, Mary moved to Henning, where she had resided for the past 26 years.

Mary was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Henning and the Elmer Goche V.F.W. Post 3922 Ladies Auxiliary in Wadena. She was a caregiver for the Home Health Services and participated in the “Foster Grandmother” program.

She worked for Public Employees of Minnesota in the WIC Program and also the fuel assistance program. Mary loved to travel and she took many trips with her good friend, Addie Loser.

They both loved music, dancing and going out with friends. For the past year Mary has made her home in Fergus Falls at the Heartland Pioneer Cottage.

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Mary in death were her parents; her husband, Tommy; brothers: Otto Korp, Jr. and James Korp; and a sister, Virginia Fairy.
