The Verndale Pirates treated the Hillcrest gymnasium the way a real swashbuckler would, by pillaging a three set victory (25-8, 25-19, 25-4) from the Hillcrest Comets in their home opener Tuesday evening.

Kelsey Nersten led the Comet defense with six blocks, while Maddie Veum led the offensive attack for Hillcrest with 10 kills.

The Comets look to improve as they host the Battle Lake Battlers Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Otters sweep Rocori

It wasn’t their best game, but the Fergus Falls Otter volleyball team was able to take a three set sweep from the visiting Rocori Spartans (25-17, 25-23, 25-20).

The Otters looked as if they were going to cruise to another victory, but the Spartans were able to recover from a 10 point deficit in the second set off seven Fergus errors.

The Fergus girls were able to rally back and close out the visiting Spartans.

“Physically we brought the same energy from our pervious games,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “Mentally we had a tough time getting through the match. We are happy with the win, but we had to many unforced errors.”

Fergus was solid from the serving line as Brianna Rasmusson went 21 for 21 with three aces, while teammate Jordan Harworth was 14 for 14 with one ace in the victory.

Devonie Smith led the defensive attack with 13 digs, while Ramusson chipped in 10 of her own.

The Otters will now get a much deserved break as they will travel to take on Central Lakes Conference opponent St. Cloud Tech Tuesday at 7 p.m.
