City of Fergus Falls takes right approachPublished 11:52am Friday, September 14, 2012
We’re all for making the streets safer for children, whether they are getting around during the summer or getting to school, so a study conducted by the city to determine safety issues is applauded.
The study, funded entirely by a grant, found that a lack of continuous sidewalks on at least one side of the street on routes to schools and around the schools, as well as speeding vehicles and a lack of visibility at some locations as safety concerns.
Some of the solutions are relatively inexpensive to incorporate, such as encouraging kids to walk or bike, adding stop signs and enforcement of traffic safety laws.
Building sidewalks, of course, will be more costly, but that is no excuse not to move forward. It’s possible there are grants available to help cover the expense.
Waiting for a child to get hurt to fix a safety concern is no way to correct a problem. We appreciate the proactive approach being taken far better.
