The M State Spartan men’s golf team was able to hold their own on their home course Monday afternoon as they captured first place at the Spartan Invite.

The Spartans, just coming off a win at The Preserve in Pequot Lakes, shot a team score of 313 for a first place finish.

Hibbing Community College finished in second with a score of 338, while Central Lakes rounded out the top three.

“”It was nice to play at home on a very windy day,” Spartan coach Jason Retzlaff said. “Our performance as a team was a little up as we need to manage our game a bit better.”

M State’s Taylor Shuck took first place at his home course shooting one over par for a 73. Teammate Brandon Sletmoen came in second with a 74.

Chris Theilen of Central Lakes Community College took third in the event with a 79.

“Taylor Shuck played a great round of golf and was in total control of his game. Brandon Sletmoen played an excellent round as well and has played very well in our last 3 rounds,” Retzlaff added.

The Spartans will look to make it three-in-a-row as they travel to Virginia Golf Course Sunday to participate in the Mesabi Invite a 1 p.m.
