Saturday was the first day of Fall, and it definitely felt like it as runners and walkers took to the streets in the 3rd Annual Spartan 5K. Despite the cooler temps, the race saw record attendance with 180 participants this year.

Race Director Dave Jensen attributes this boost to the “Couch to 5K” training groups that have been preparing since July. “Our primary focus this year was to introduce as many people as possible to the active lifestyle that we enjoy so much”, said Jensen. “With over half our participants being first-time 5K finishers, I’d say it was a huge success”.

While a majority may have been first-time runners and walkers, there were also a good number of seasoned veterans.

One of those seasoned veterans was local runner Paul Shol whose impressive 16:35 finishing time gave him the over-all win and smashed the course record. Behind him was M State Runner Brittin Roberts whose 16:58 finishing time makes him the first and fastest barefoot runner to compete in the Spartan 5K.

Coming in first for the women was Lynn Wolters with a time of 21:22 followed by Angie Kamrath with a time of 21:54. Taking top honors in the team competition was Team RyanHansonHomes who finished just ahead of Team M State in a tight race.
