A Fergus Falls man was tilling his garden Wednesday, Sept. 5 when he made a shocking discovery. He uncovered two headstones under an overgrown bush at his home near Lake Region Hospital.

The man called police at around 7:30 p.m. and reported the finding. One headstone reads, “Amos C Nelson Pvt. COF 13 Minn. Vols. Spanish American War March 27, 1877 to Jan. 5, 1941.” The other reads, Jacob A Nelson Corp. Co H 53 Inf. Civil War Dec. 30, 1839 to March 29, 1917.”

The man said he recently moved to the home. Police advised him not to continue digging. The man said he would call City Hall today.

Police are still unsure of how they will proceed.
