Spartans take second at Giant’s Ridge

BIWABIK — The M State Spartan Men’s golf team settled for second place finish at The Legend at Giant’s Ridge Sunday.

Mesabi Range was able to edge out the Spartans shooting a 311 team score, while M State (316) an Rochester CTC (339) rounded out the top three.

This was the first time in 10 tournaments that the Spartans did not finish first.

Kory Shelrud of Mesabi took medalist honors as he shot a even par at 72.

M State’ Matt Wagner took second overall at the tournament shooting a 77, followed by teammate Rob Goff with a 78.

“We showed improvement today as all of our Freshman shot better scores than early in the week in Hibbing,” Spartans coach Jason Retzlaff said. “Matt Wagner had an excellent round and managed his game extremely well. Rob Goff was also very consistent for us throughout the day.”

The Spartans will now play at The Quarry at Giant’s Ridge Monday.
