Peterson bright spot for Knights [UPDATED]
Published 9:37am Tuesday, October 2, 2012 Updated 11:39am Tuesday, October 2, 2012The West Central Area Knights football team might be 1–4, but senior wide receiver/safety Drew Peterson is one of the bright spots that could help turn the team around in the second half of the season and into the playoffs.
Now in his third year as a starter, Peterson has six touchdowns on the season, two of which came as runs in a tough 32-21 homecoming loss Friday.
The team’s record might be down, but Peterson has high hopes for the rest of the season.
“We’re better than our record shows,” Peterson said. “We have to believe in ourselves because we know we have a good team.”
Peterson said his head coach David Drexler and offensive coordinator Arick Follingstad have been some of his biggest influences.
“If I need to talk, I can go to them,” he said. “I can trust them with stuff, and they’re good coaches.”
The WCA football coaches are friendly, they know what they’re doing and they make practice fun, Peterson said.
Aside from football, Peterson is also involved with basketball, track, choir, student council and National Honors Society. He was named homecoming king last week, and Peterson said he enjoys going to school at WCA.
“I’m just trying to enjoy it while it lasts,” he said. “Everybody says your senior year goes by so fast.”
Peterson said he isn’t sure what his plans are for next year, but he would like to go to a four-year school to study business or education.
North Dakota State University is his top choice, and he would like to continue in basketball or football at the college level.
The WCA football team still has three games left in the regular season against Royalton, Otter Tail Central and United North Central before the playoffs begin.
Peterson said the Knights will have to come together as a team and take the season one game at a time to be successful.
“We need to believe in ourselves, know our keys on defense and execute on offense (in order to beat Royalton on Friday),” he said.
