The Fergus Falls School District will be joining schools around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Week, October 1-5, 2012.
Kennedy Secondary School 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will participate in the celebration by walking around the practice football field during the second half of their lunch period on Oct. 3. Students will be led by Kennedy Secondary Teachers Linda Bowhall, Paul Talley, Jeff Moon, and Renee Erickson. McKinley Physical Education Instructor Jamie Lill has organized an event at McKinley; kindergarten students will be led by their teachers on a 10-15 minute walk starting at 2:45 pm on Wednesday.
According to School Nurse Erika Yoney, “It’s important to provide more opportunities to get students moving during their school day.
Research indicates that increased physical activity can result in an increase in student achievement.”
Communities around the world are using the International Walk to School Week as a springboard to improved student health via:
• Increased opportunities to walk and bike
• Increased access to physical activity can result in improved health outcomes
• Creation of safer routes for walking and bicycling
• New or improved sidewalks, educational programs, and traffic calming measures are some of the ways routes are made safer.
In the U.S., International Walk to School Week is expected to be celebrated by 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults from 40 countries around the world.
The Fergus Falls School District participation in this year’s event in is organized by the Fergus Falls School Wellness Committee with help from PartnerSHIP4Health as part of a sustainable, systemic approach in schools, worksites, communities and health care organizations making it easier for Minnesotans to incorporate healthy behaviors into their daily lives.
