The M State Spartan golf team defended their Region 8 and MCAC titles by winning for a second consecutive year.

With the victory, the Spartans qualified as a team for the NJCAA Division Three National Championships at Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, N.Y. June 4 through 7 where the Spartans will attempt to defend their title as NJCAA National Champions.

The Spartans shot 325 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 646 to win the championship by 16 shots over Southwest Technical College. The tournament was held at Bobby’s Legacy at Cragun’s Resort on Gull Lake.

“The Legacy is a course that demands that you keep the ball in play and our players executed the game plan very well,” said head coach Jason Retzlaff. “All 7 of our players were great contributors and can be very proud. I am thrilled that this group will get an opportunity to go to New York to defend our national title.”

Fergus Falls’ Lucas Gervais was the individual MCAC and Region 8 champion by 8 strokes with a two-day total of 150. Spartans head coach Jason Retzlaff was named Region 8 coach of the year for a second year in a row.

“It was a fantastic two days and a great accomplishment for our golf team,” Retzlaff said. “After last year season, there were some heightened expectations, and these young men stepped in and performed the entire fall season with great poise.”
