Grass fire caused by garbage burn

A 48-year-old New York Mills woman was cited Wednesday after a garbage fire she started spread to about 40 acres of grassland, law enforcement reported.

Around 3:20 p.m., firefighters were called to 48773 County Highway 67, where a grass fire had gotten out of control, according to the county sheriff’s office. The fire reportedly began when Charlotte Brown, who lives at the address, burned some garbage in a concrete put on the property. The fire spread to the grass and moved quickly due to high winds.

Firefighters from New York Mills, Perham, Wolf Lake and the DNR (including a firefighting helicopter) managed to extinguish the fire after about three hours. Brown was cited for open burning of garbage.
