Jays control Spartans in 37-0 win
Published 7:29am Monday, October 8, 2012WORTHINGTON – The M State Spartans saw their playoff hopes dashed Saturday afternoon as the Minnesota West Blue Jays celebrated a 37-0 homecoming victory, clinching a spot in the MCAC playoffs.
The Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead as they took the opening possession for a touchdown on a two play 58 yard drive. Minnesota West’s next possession would put them up 10-0 on a field goal in the first quarter.
After another quarter of play, the Spartans looked to rally down 10-0 at the break. This did not happen as poor execution allowed the Blue Jays to play with short field the whole second half. Minnesota West would score four touchdowns in the second half to gain a playoff birth and send the Spartans home with a loss.
“We just can’t get into a rhythm offensively and we have struggled because of it,” Spartans offensive coordinator Zach Stich said. “Our defense gives us opportunities every game to turn the tide, but a penalty here and a missed assignment there, adds up in the end.”
Hayden Zenner led the Spartans on the ground rushing for 48 yards. Zach Taylor had one of the few shining spots defensively as he intercepted a pass.
The Spartans will finish their regular season Saturday at 1:30 p.m. versus Itasca Community College.
