Otters repeat as CLC champs
Published 9:32am Wednesday, October 10, 2012On Tuesday evening, the Fergus Falls volleyball team was able to not only celebrate their 16th straight victory, but claim their second consecutive Central Lakes Conference title as they defeated the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm in four sets (25-17, 25-10, 23-25, 25-12).
The Otters looked to breezed past the Storm in the first two sets and finish the night with a clean sweep.
Sauk Rapids prevented the sweep as they edged past the home team due to unforced errors.
“We left the building for a bit in that third set,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “We had 15 unforced errors, but after we found our focus we were able to come back in the fourth set and put the game away.”
Fergus was able to close out the game in the fourth set as they reverted back to their earlier performance in sets one and two for the victory.
Laura Gaustad was strong on the offensive side for Fergus as she recorded 16 kills. Teammates Brianna Rasmusson and Devonie Smith also added to the offensive output as each had a great night from the service line. Smith was 23 for 23 with five aces, while Ramusson finished 20 for 21 with four aces in the victory.
“One of our team goals was to have a perfect record in the CLC and win the conference. We accomplished one this evening, but we will have to face a tough Rocori team to get the other,” Erickson added.
The Otters will look to finish out their regular season schedule Thursday as they go for an undefeated record in the CLC as they travel to take on Rocori at 7 p.m.
