Trail topic of discussion Tuesday at FF library [UPDATED]
Published 9:32am Friday, October 12, 2012 Updated 11:34am Friday, October 12, 2012The public is invited to learn more about the development of the nation’s longest hiking trail, the North Country Trail Association, in Otter Tail and Wilkin counties during a presentation at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Fergus Falls Public Library in Fergus Falls.
The NCT is the nation’s longest hiking trail stretching 4,600 miles from eastern New York to western North Dakota.
The purpose of the presentation is to: 1) Introduce the community to the NCT; 2) Introduce the management of the NCT — e.g. role of local volunteers, role of local partners, and roles of the NCTA and National Park Service; 3) Introduce the NCT route and ask for input on its potential; and 4) Ask attendees about their interest in getting involved.
The NCT is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails in the U.S. and was designated by Congress in 1980. Since then, volunteers associated with the non-profit NCTA have built over 2,000 miles of the NCT including nearly 600 here in Minnesota.
More information on the Trail and the NCTA is available online at northcountrytrail.org, via Facebook (facebook.com/NCTinMN, or by calling 1-866-HIKE-NCT.
