Plenty of activities going on at Center [UPDATED]
Published 9:30am Thursday, October 18, 2012 Updated 11:30am Thursday, October 18, 2012After a busy September and early October, our calendar is showing a slight lull in activity here at A Center for the Arts. But don’t let it fool you. Things are still going on — children choirs are meeting weekly, Fergus Falls School of Dance is using our stage for classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, We are working on remodeling our new space above the Senior Citizen’s Center across the street, and many of our staff members are lining up programing and sponsors for our 2013-14 season.
The only remaining performance in October is Michael Martin Murphey on Saturday, Oct. 27, but the show is already sold out.
We are, however, taking names for a waiting list, and we are asking our 305 Center Series ticket holders to release their seats back to us for re-sale if they can’t use them.
We really don’t want any empty seats in the house when we have a waiting list of people wanting to see the show.
Our only show in November is the April Verch Band on Friday, Nov. 16. There are still tickets available for this internationally renowned Canadian performer.
April Verch’s high-energy show blends her talents as a fiddler, singer/songwriter and stepdancer into a charming, vibrant display of music and dancing that sets her apart from the rest.
April is the first woman in history to win both of Canada’s most prestigious fiddle championships: the Grand Masters and the Canadian Open.
She was also selected to perform in the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
Throw down the plywood and let April and her boys do the rest.
Then, our numerous holiday shows start on Dec. 1 with the first performance of Dance and Dessert, our annual holiday fundraiser with the Fergus Falls School of Dance.
In the meantime, I am taking a little break. I’m on vacation this week, mostly doing a little fall clean up around the house.
But I think I’ll take a day to get my mom out to see the numerous art galleries in Fergus Falls.
Our lobby is displaying the work of Marion Otnes, the Kaddatz is just across the street, and the Lake Region Arts Council and Springboard for the Arts galleries are right around the corner.
And of course, there is a lot of cool artwork on the walls at M State, Lake Region Hospital has a gallery in the halls outside its cafeteria, and the Otter Tail County Historical Society museum always has cool stuff on display.
There isn’t a day in the week that you can’t find art of some sort somewhere in Fergus Falls.
