Rockets win home invite
Published 11:06am Friday, October 19, 2012The Underwood volleyball team was able to close out their season with a big win on their home court Thursday evening as they captured the title at their home invitational.
The Rockets opened up the tournament with two wins in pool play as they defeated Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, both in two set sweeps.
This put the host team in the championship bracket as they took on Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in the semi-final match. The Saint had an early advantage in set one, but the Rockets were able to battle back and edge out KMS 25-23. Underwood was able to put the match away as they moved quickly through the second set with a 25-7 victory.
Underwood would move into the championship match against Wheaton/Herman-Norcross. The Rockets would play the Warriors in two tight sets, winning both (25-19, 25-20) to sweep through the tournament for the win.
“It was an intense match and we were pretty excited to come out on the winning side,” Rockets coach Diane Ross said. “Wheaton has a good program and a talented team, so it was pretty satisfying.”
Brianna Fitzgibbons had a great day from the service line as she went 47 for 50 with two aces, while teammate Megan Biegler was 41 for 43 with six aces and had 12 blocks for the Rockets.
Carly Masloski was once again a force at the net as she recorded 38 kills during the tournament.
The Rothsay Tigers also participated in the tournament going 0-2 in pool play losing matches to Wheaton and KMS.
The Tigers would exit the championship bracket early as Buffalo Lake swept them in two sets. Rothsay would rebound d in the consolation bracket as they took a two set victory over C-G-B in the afternoon.
The Rockets finish the season with a 23-4 record, while the Tigers stand at 12-14-1 and will await the seedings for the Section 6A playoffs.
