Local teams prepare for playoffs
Published 10:59am Monday, October 22, 2012After a regular season that saw hot nights turn to cold evenings, local area football teams will be gearing up for the 2012 Minnesota High School football playoffs.
The Fergus Falls Otters (5-3) will open up the playoffs at home Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they took the third seed in the Section 8AAAA playoffs. They will take on new comer to Class 4A in the East Grand Forks Green Wave (3-5), who finished the regular season with five straight losses.
The nine man football landscape finds only one area team receiving a home playoff game as the Underwood Rockets (7-1) locked up the number one seed in Section 4. THey will host Bertha-Hewitt at 7 p.m. The Ashby Arrows (4-4) as the sixth seed will travel to take on last season’s state runner-up in Wheaton/Herman-Norcross, while the Brandon-Evansville Chargers (3-5) will challenge one loss Onamia, both games at 7 p.m.
The Hillcrest Comets (3-5) hope that a tough regular season schedule will help them in the playoffs as they received the sixth seed in Section 6. They will travel to take on the Waubun Bombers in a 6 p.m. game. Taking on number one seeded Nevis, the Rothsay Tigers (1-7) will look to make their mark against an undefeated team.
In Section 6A, the three seeded Otter Tail Central Bulldogs (6-2) will host Lake Park-Audubon in a 6 p.m. game in Battle Lake. The New York Mills Eagles (2-6) received the seventh seed and will travel to play Browerville at 6 p.m., while the West Central Area Knights(2-6) will challenge the section top seed in Pillager at 6 p.m.
The Pelican Rapids Vikings (6-2) picked up the third seed in Section 8AA, but will have to prepare for a Prairie Valley football team that played nine man football the entire season. The Vikings will host the Nighthawks in a 6 p.m. game Tuesday.
The Perham Yellowjackets (7-1) will get a break Tuesday evening as they received a first round bye in Section 8AAA. They will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. as they host the winner of the Crookston/Pequot Lakes game.
