FF District falls short of lofty goals

Before the 2011/2012 school year began, the school board set four goals. An annual report was provided at Monday night’s school board meeting, and it was announced the district went one for four, falling short of three lofty goals.

The first goal was to meet or exceed the state average for ACT and MCA scores. The ACT composite score for the district was 22.4, and the state’s composite score was 22.8. The district had 10 MCA sections above the state average and seven that tested below. The only subject students in the district exceeded the state average in every grade level was science.

The second goal was to have 90 percent of seniors attend a post-secondary institution or military service. The district came up short with 84.3 percent.

Goal number three was for the graduation rate to meet or exceed 95 percent. The district ended up with 93 percent of seniors making it through their final year, and 73.2 percent of students who entered ninth grade in 2007 graduating in 2012.

Part of the reason this number is so low is because 11.3 percent of the 26.8 percent of students recorded as not graduating fall under the “unknown” category. These students left, and nobody in the district knows if they continued their education or not, said curriculum coordinator Carri Thompson.

The board’s fourth goal was to implement the “3Rs + 1” (Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic + Relationships) focus through professional learning communities.

Teachers met throughout the year to focus on reading, writing, math and building student relationships.
