HLA stuns Bombers in 20-6 win

WAUBUN — The sixth seeded Hillcrest Comets were able to win a defensive struggle against the hosting Waubun Bombers Tuesday evening as they upset the three seed 20-6 in the Section 6 9-man playoffs.

With the weather being a factor in the game, neither team could produce much offense in the early going. Both team jostled for field position in the first quarter.

The Comets were finally able to break through the ceiling and the Waubun defense as Vinnie Veum scampered for a three yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter.

Hillcrest would add another score before the half as quarterback Dalton Tostenson called his own number from one yard out to give the Comets a 13-0 lead at the break.

The second half opened like the first as both teams could not move the ball against the opposing defense.

The Bombers seem to find a rhythm late in the quarter and were able to cap it off with a one yard touchdown run by Ryan MacAurther in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to only seven after a missed extra point.

The battle would rage on as both teams were fighting to keep their season alive.

The Comets would clinch the win late in the game as runningback Theo Taylor bolted down the field for a 40 yard touchdown run with nearly a minute remaining.

“It was a close game right down to the final minute,” Comet coach Charlie Brue said. “We had a great defensive first half.”

Neither team racked up many offensive yards as the Hillcrest finished the evening with 178 yards of total offense, while Waubun only found 169 yards.

Taylor led the Comets on the ground with 19 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown and added three catches for 36 yards receiving in the win.

Tostenson was able to keep a balanced attack for Hillcrest as he finished the evening throwing for 90 yards in a 6 for 14 night.

In a defensively dominant evening, Chad Hermes led the Comets with seven solo tackles and five assisted, while teammate Sam Martens finished the evening with five tackles and five assisted.

The Comets will now move on to play the second seeded Ada-Borup Cougars Saturday at 7 p.m. in Ada.
