Otters advance, beat EGF 21-18Published 9:19am Wednesday, October 24, 2012
The Fergus Falls football team found out just how important special teams are in a game as three key Sam Rausch extra points put the Otters in the second round of the Section 8AAAA as they defeated East Grand Forks 21-18 Tuesday.
The Otter defense opened up the night with the first score as Reece Johnson picked off a Nick Erickson pass and took it 87 yards to paydirt. Rausch hit the extra point to give the Otters a 7-0 lead.
The mist and rain would keep both teams on their toes throughout the first half. The Green Wave would finally make their presence felt as a 12 play, 81 yard drive ended with a one yard plunge by Ryan Boushee on a fourth down play. East Grand Forks missed the ensuing extra point leaving the game 7-6 at the break.
On their first possession of the second half, Fergus was able to move the ball on seven plays, finishing with a five yard rush by quarterback Brady Hansen.
The Green Wave responded with a drive of their own as Boushee added his second touchdown of the night on his second one yard run. After another failed extra point, the Otters held an eight point lead.
Fergus was looking to establish breathing room in the fourth quarter as Drew Reinertson punched his way across the goal line for a three yard score.
The Otters looked to wrap up a win after a Hansen interception, but gave the ball right back to East Grand Forks on a fumble. The turnover setup a 10 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Brown from Erickson to cut the lead three.
In a questionable decision, the Green Wave decided against an onside kick late in the game and looked to pin the Otters deep on the kickoff.
Fergus proved to be too strong from the visitor as they used a balanced run attack to eat up the clock and seal the victory.
“We are very happy to get back on the winning track,” Otter coach Richard Risbrudt said. “We put in four solid quarters and our guys never give up.”
The difference for the Otters came in special teams as Rausch was able to go a perfect three for three in extra points, while the Green Wave could not convert on their point after attempts.
Walker Heinen continues his great senior campaign rushing for 175 yards on 29 carries for the Otters, while Erickson led the Green Wave with 114 yards on 26 rushes and 115 yards through the air and touchdown.
Fergus will now prepare for the two seeded Rocori Spartans.
“They are tied with us and Brainerd for the Central Lakes Conference championship. They are a very tough football team, so we will need to be well prepared for Saturday,” Risbrudt added.
The Otters will hit the field Saturday to take on the Spartans in Cold Spring at 7 p.m.
