FF’s Danielson advances to state

BEMIDJI — In brisk weather conditions, Fergus Falls’ Connor Danielson was able to finish ninth, locking a spot in the Class AA state, at the Section 8AA meet Thursday.

Danielson finished the race with a time of 17:01. Sam Carlson of Bemidji took top honors as an individual with a time of 16:32.3.

Moorhead’s Ezra Olson (16:45.2) and St. Cloud Tech’s Wade Krueger (16:47.1) rounded out the top three spots.

“Connor ran a smart race working hard to hold his spot to qualify,” Otters’ coach Niki Welde said.

The Bemidji Lumberjacks were able to capture the team championship, while Moorhead took runner-up honors, both advancing as teams to the state meet.

The Otters finished in 12th place as a team.

Jake Jennen was the next Otter runner to cross the finish line with a time of 18:06.1 for 50th place. Clay Danielson (18:30.5, 65th), Austin Gendron (20:37.5, 99th) Tyler Giza (20:41.3, 100th), Donovan Wood (20:44.0, 101st) and Cal Mouritsen (20:53.1, 104th) rounded out the Fergus runners.

In girls action, freshmen twin sisters Megan and Bethany Hasz of Alexandria took first and second in the meet with a times of 14:10.1 and 14:10.4.

Paige Larson was the top finisher for the Otters taking 32nd place with a time of 16:07.4.

“Paige ran a smart, even paced race. She moved up well throughout the race, and had a good time for the conditions today,” commen ted Welde.

Annie Magnusson (16:38.4, 48th), Cierra Larson (17:30.6, 77th), Callieann Hoffbeck (17:39.2, 82nd), McKenna Hatlewick (17:40.4, 84th), Johanna Schmidt (17:51.7, 91st) and Kayla Jarandson (18:13.6, 97th) rounded out the team score for the ninth place Otters.

Monticello claimed the girls team championship, while Alexandria finished in second, securing spots in the state meet.

The top two teams and top eight individual not associated with those teams qualify for the Section meet advance to the Class AA state meet held at St. Olaf College in Northfield Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
