Spartans upset champs, off to national tourney

WILLMAR — The M State Spartans celebrated a huge win Saturday afternoon as they upset last year’s NJCAA champion Ridgewater Warriors 3-2 (25-23, 15-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-10) and claimed the Region 13A title.

Morgan Kapphahn led the attack for the Spartans with 14 kills, while Cheyanne O’Neal chipped in 12 kills in the match.

Gretchen Freed tallied 22 digs for M State in the win.

The Spartans defeated the Rochester Yellowjackets Friday night in a 3-2 squeaker (15-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 15-7).

This will be the first time M State has been in the NJCAA national tournament since 2003.

The Spartans will travel to Rochester for the NJCAA Div. III National tournament Nov. 7-10.
