A high-speed chase was called off, but that didn’t stop law enforcement from finding and arresting an 18-year-old Hillsboro man in Wahpeton Sunday.

A Richland County sheriff’s deputy responded to a call reporting a reckless driver on State Highway 13 near Wahpeton at around 9 p.m. The suspect led the deputy on a high-speed chase down Richland County township and county roads reaching speeds of about 80 miles per hour.

The chase was called off when the black Ford pickup entered South Dakota near Dakota Magic Casino.

Several hours later, the Wahpeton Police Department spotted a vehicle matching the description at the Sta-Mart gas station in Wahpeton. The driver of the vehicle, Derek Paulsrud, 18, of Hillsboro N.D., was arrested without incident.

Paulsrud was taken to the Richland County jail on charges of fleeing law enforcement. The case is still under investigation, and further charges are possible.
