PELICAN RAPIDS — A heated Heart O’Lakes volleyball match continued to add fire to flame Thursday as the visiting Perham Yellowjackets were able to defeat the Pelican Rapids Vikings 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-10) and eliminate them from the Section 8AA playoffs.
From the opening set, fans knew that neither team had the upper hand. The Yellowjackets were able to take the first set after falling behind early.
The Vikings were able to respond in set number two to keep the match up close, but saw an aggressive attack by Perham take set number three.
Facing elimination, the Vikings were able to rally from a late two point deficit to pick up a set four win and force a decisive set number five.
Once again, the match would come down to the wire as a 9-9 tie created a make or break moment for each team.
With the season on the line, the Yellowjackets were able to win the next five points and the eventual set by a close 15-10 score.
“We did not pass very well the first few balls and had to give the Yellowjackets some easy free balls to work with,” Vikings coach Heidi Isaman said. “Perham took advantage and attacked the ball.”
Alyssa Huesby led the offensive attack for Pelican with 10 kills, while Kendra Weinrich, who played in her first game since returning from injury, finished with eight.
The Yellowjackets will now move on to play Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Friday at 7 p.m.
The Vikings end their season with a 17-8 overall record.
“This was a very difficult loss for these girls, but they showed a lot of heart and preserverance in this tight battle. I was so proud of their efforts and their teamwork throughout the night and the entire season,” Isaman added.
