FERGUS FALLS — Fergus Falls played with a little extra motivation on Tuesday on Senior Night, defeating St. Cloud Apollo 2-1 in a great physical match.

It was a very competitive first half as both teams were playing outstanding defense, but Apollo struck first with a goal with about 13 minutes remaining.

The second half began with some physical play, which resulted in the Otters getting a nice call from the official. Nikki Ellingson took advantage and set up Lauren Norgren for the Otters’ first goal. After some more back-and-forth play the Otters found the net again when Hannah Barker assisted Kathryn Sawtell on the Otters’ second score with around seven minutes remaining. The Fergus defense came up big to finish out the match.

“Tonight was senior night and they played their hearts out,” coach Karoline Gustafson said. “The entire team played well to give those seniors a win on their home field.”

Nikki Ellingson was voted player of the game by her peers. “She placed some very dangerous balls for us and was lights out on the back line,” Gustafson said.

Gustafson also recognized seniors Tessa Hagstrom, Emily Nelson, Kaitlin Capouch, Rachael Heidorn, Rachael Melby and Megan Niblock. “They have played a lot of soccer together over the years and they have been great role models to the younger players,” Gustafson said. “Tonight was a special win for them and a special win for the team.”

The Otters travel to St. Cloud Tech for their final match of the regular season.
