Plenty still going on at Center [UPDATED]

Published 10:20am Thursday, November 8, 2012 Updated 12:21pm Thursday, November 8, 2012

It is hard to believe how much stuff we have going on at A Center for the Arts, and the variety is really incredible.

I look at our schedule and we really do have all six major arts disciplines: Visual art, music, dance, theatre, film and literary arts.

Our lobby gallery features a different artist each month, focusing on new and emerging artists. A newly formed committee juries the submissions. However, December will be an art sale with several different artists selling their creations.

Musical performances are one of our mainstays, and with the many different genres of music, we can do dozens of shows without repeating a specific style.

Our dance programming includes not only the local talent from the Fergus Falls School of Dance, but also major professional dance companies. Flying Foot Forum out of the Twin Cities will be here in February.

Our theatrical offerings also include both local and professional performances.

We are actually planning on doing more theater in the future. We have three plays scheduled for 2013 so far, and are considering adding a few more.

The film category (which is actually on DVD these days) includes documentary/meet the filmmaker events, and screenings such as Sarah Larson’s film production, “He Leadeth Me.”

And finally, the literary arts are often represented through our collaborative events with other community organizations like the public library, Viking Library System, M State, the Historical Society, Prairie Wetland Learning Center, and more.

Like I said, I work here, and it’s hard to keep up with everything.

On top of offering performances and activities in all six arts disciplines; we also have music lessons during the school year, Summer Arts Academy, free concerts in the part in the summer, and we are already using our new studio and rehearsal spaces across the street that are being renovated.

We really do offer something for everyone.

Our next Center Series show is Canadian dynamo April Verch at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. Her high-energy show blends her talents as a fiddler, singer/songwriter and stepdancer into a charming, vibrant display of music and dancing that sets her apart from the rest.

Joining April are her band members, Hayes Griffin on guitar and Cody Walters on upright-electric bass and banjo; both of whom are world-class musicians in their own right.

Then comes our whirlwind December performances with Dance and Dessert, Wendy and Linda, a concert by our Childrens’ Choirs, the touring show from the Cities “At Christmas,” and finally a holiday theater organ concert.

For information and tickets on all our upcoming events, visit our Web site at www.FergusArts.org or stop by the Fergus Theatre box office downtown Fergus Falls at 124 W. Lincoln Ave, Tuesdays through Fridays between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. You can also call us at 218-998-ARTS (2787).
