On an October day in 2011 a new little bundle of fur arrived in the arms of Audrey Swanson, a twelve year old Perham girl. Audrey wished and wished for a lap dog to call her own, but since the family already had a Springer Spaniel named Taz, it seemed a far away dream. Little did she know that her parents were searching Animal Shelters for a birthday gift that would be a surprise; and a big surprise it was. Oscar, a sweet spunky little Shih-Tzu was presented in a cuddly blanket, much like a new baby in the hospital nursery. Besides being thrilled, Audrey was so touched by this that she made it her goal to provide soft blankets for other adopted kittens and puppies. But . . . where to start?

Big Hearts Little Animals

Sierra Edvall, a good friend who has a heart of gold, and loves animals as much as Audrey decided to join forces and the two began their Animal Rescue Baby Blanket project. It wasn’t long before several blankets were ready for delivery and much to their delight, a group of women who run an organization called “Caring Hearts” surfaced.

Nancy Stokes, Bernice Niemela, Judy Shackleford and Judy Gunderson rescue animals large and small, give them the shelter they need, nurse them to health, provide shots, and wait for the right family to adopt them. These ladies were tickled when Audrey and Sierra came with the first batch of blankets.

Similar to when a human baby is adopted, the new parents usually receive the child with blankets, clothes, and a stuffed toy. So too, when animal babies arrive in their new home, they come equipped with a blanket and toy provided by Audrey and Sierra.

Oscar the Shih-Tzu is a year old now and still looks for his blanket when it’s time to bed down for the night.

Sierra feels she is “Helping all the animals of the world. She says the blankets help stop “Global Colding’”.

On the last Saturday of each month from 10am to 3 pm you can find Nancy, Bernice, Judy and/or Judy at “All Creatures Veterinary Hospital” Parking lot at 905 Jenny Ave SW in Perham where an animal food shelf is provided. The pantry is open to receive and distribute donations. They take donations of foods and goods for pet livestock, birds, reptiles, and small, furry critters. They especially need horse feed and hay, dog and cat food and cat litter.
