The Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Fergus Falls is honoring vets today with special activities, and a lot of thanks.

Today’s program started off with “Coffee with a Veteran” at 10 a.m., and continues with guest speaker Lynette Cox and music by the Lee Family. But it is a young guest that may have a lasting impact with veterans today.

14 year-old Heather Weller from New York Mills is planning to deliver 500 cards and more than 2,500 emails to share with veterans, thanking them for their service.

Heather first made 85 “Thank You for Your Service” cards after she went to visit her great uncle at the Veterans Home in Fergus Falls and visited with some of the vets.

The project has expanded every year, and now she is collecting thank you email messages from around the country that she prints and presents to the veterans.

This year she got permission from NYM School superintendent Todd Cameron, high school principal Blaine Novak, and elementary school principal Judith Brockway for the whole school to participate in making thank you greetings. She was still counting all of the cards and emails last Friday.

“It has become a tradition to have Heather with us helping us to honor and thank our veterans,” said Deanna Mounts, volunteer service coordinator at the veteran’s home.

“My favorite part is seeing their faces and how excited they get when I come and visit,” said Weller. “They like to have somebody younger to talk to. I like visiting with them and hearing their stories.”
