Spartans fall in opener [UPDATED]
Published 7:18am Thursday, November 15, 2012 Updated 7:19am Thursday, November 15, 2012The M State Womens basketball team opened up their season Wednesday night at home with a tough loss 87-61 to the North Dakota School of Science, located in Wahpeton, North Dakota.
The Wildcats got out to a fast start and took advantage of the lady Spartans ,who seemed to be fatigued and a little rusty. Five of the Spartan players were part of the M State volleyball team, who had just returned from the National tournament over the weekend. They were not able to develop early chemistry with little practice time and certainly the NDSCS was not going to give them a break.
The Lady Spartans with a sophomore filled starting lineup battled back and went into the locker room down 41-21 at the half.
Wahpeton stayed hot throughout the night shooting 47 percent from the field, and capitalizing on several M-State turnovers scoring 32 points off the miscues.
The Spartans finished the game with 23 turnovers compared to NDSCS’s 13.
The Wildcats were paced by Shamika Hopkins and Allyson Suhr who had 21 and 17 points, respectively.
The Spartans were led by Sophomore Alyssa Blair, who finished the night with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Maria Johnson chipped in 10 for M State, and Morgan Kapphahn had seven.
M State looks to bounce back this Saturday at 1 p.m. at home against the Central Lakes Community College Raiders.
