FF should get out of conference [UPDATED]

There has been much talk recently about the Fergus Falls Public Schools sports getting out of the Central Lakes Conference, and we think that this is a good choice.

Most of the schools in the CLC are in the St. Cloud area, and that makes for long drives and late nights for many student athletes. The drive down I-94 is tedious and costly for spectators, coaches and athletes.

Being one of the smallest schools in the conference makes it difficult to be competitive in many sports, and we want to see our Fergus Falls athletes be successful. Even sports that are well coached and loaded with talent often can’t compete with schools such as Brainerd, St. Cloud Tech and Willmar, which have almost twice the enrollment of Kennedy Secondary School.

We would like to see some of the old rivalries renewed, so we can enjoy the classic showdowns like Otters versus Detroit Lakes. Schools like Sauk Rapids/Rice and Sartell don’t make for natural rivalries that fans love to watch.

The CLC has introduced some new and fun competition, but overall, we don’t think it has been a good fit for Fergus Falls.

It may be in the best interest of the school to join the Heart O Lakes conference or return to the days of being a non-conference school.
