Local DJ raising money for food shelf [UPDATED]

With seasonal layoffs, area food shelves are in great need of help this time of year, and one local DJ has taken it upon himself to make a difference.

DJ Wild Mikey (Mike Erwin) will put on four shows in December, two at Marie’s Tavern and two at the American Legion Post 489 in Underwood. All money raised, including tips to Erwin will be donated to the Fergus Falls and Battle Lake food shelves. Erwin started the fundraiser three years ago, and the event has grown each year.

In the first year of the event, Erwin raised $1,700, but 2011 tripled that number at $4,447 plus food donations. While he would like to see it continue to grow, Erwin’s goal is to match last year’s donations.

“I started this to give back to the community,” he said. “I want to pay it forward.”

Erwin began his DJ business three years ago, and he does most of his shows in the lakes area.

“I’ve always loved music and people, and this is something I wanted to do,” he said. “I found a niche, and it has been working out. People seem to enjoy it.”

Erwin does shows for parties, weddings, high school dances, benefits and fundraising events.

“I play everything from country to Lady Gaga to ‘Sexy and I Know it,’” he said. “In the summer I go full time, and I play every weekend just about.”

The upcoming food shelf drive shows will be held 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dec. 7 and 8 at Marie’s Tavern in Underwood and Dec. 14 and 15 at the Underwood American Legion.

All who would like to make donations can contact Erwin at 218-731-1140 or drop off cash or nonperishable food items to Marie’s Tavern or the Underwood American Legion Post 489.
