BRAINERD — The Fergus Falls boys hockey team opened the season Tuesday with a 4-1 loss against the Brainerd Warriors.

Kyle Helmberger came up big for the Warriors as he stopped 23 shots in the first period. This allowed Brainerd to score the first goal of the night late in the period by Logan Rivard, who netted his first of two goals just over 16 minutes into the game.

Fergus was able to keep it close as no goals were scored in the second period, but as the third started, Brainerd was able to take advantage of Otter penalties to make it a three goal lead. Shortly after, Casey Ward scored the Otters’ lone goal while short-handed, assisted by Joe Nathe, but it would prove not to be enough as Brainerd added one more to bring the game to its final score of 4-1.

In net, Ian Bjorgum had twenty saves for the Otters while Kyle Helmberger ended up with a total of 30 for the Warriors. “We need to find ways to score goals. It’s an area we need to work on.” Coach Donaghue said about the game. Although the score didn’t turn out how he may have liked, he was pleased with his team’s effort, “We wanted guys to come out and compete, and I think we did.”

The Otters will take on Willmar on Tuesday at home at 7 p.m.
