Salvation Army in FF helps Christmas dreams come true [UPDATED]

But for many families on public assistance, those things are as elusive as Santa.
The Fergus Falls Salvation Army makes Christmas happen for hundreds of area families … and there is still time for families in need to apply.
Dec. 7 is the deadline to apply for the Shop for Kids program. Recipients that qualify will be able to “shop” for free at the Salvation Army on Dec. 15.
Each family may receive two to three toys per child, select clothes, a warm quilt, a family game and stocking stuffers.
And on the way out, the Salvation Army will stock the family with a turkey and fixings for a holiday meal.
There are a few qualifications, such as residency and income limits, and the applicant must have custody of the children in their family.
The Salvation Army will help families with the application process.
Parents are discouraged from bringing children to Shop for Kids day, as child care is not provided and it is nice for the kids to not see their presents in advance.
According to the Salvation Army, there are many families in our community one crisis away from bankruptcy.
In addition to spiritual guidance, the organization provides after school care, and emergency assistance to those in need throughout the year.
Last year that translated to more than $100,000 in assistance to needy individuals and families.
So what is on the wish list of an organization with a tradition of helping others in need?
“We need volunteers,” said Salvation Army Lt. Linda McCormack. “Any anyone that wants to give, and help us give a helping hand.”
