The Zero Variance PWA team split the opening weekend of the season taking the first game from Northern Lakes (Walker MN) and dropping one to the Moorhead AA team.

On Saturday, the PWA team opened the season at the FF Community Ice Arena against Northern Lakes. The season started out scary when the first 3 shots Northern Lakes took found the back of the net. Down 3 – 0 the Zero Variance team dug deep and started a strong comeback. The lone goal of the period came when Jared Kuehl moved the puck around to Nate Longtin who fed Carter Randklev for a nice goal. The first period ended 3 – 1. In the second period the PWA’s came out firing scoring 3 goals. The first came when Andrew Johnson made a perfect pass to Chase Jensen who slammed the puck in the back of the net. The second came when Randklev weaved thru 4 skaters and beat the goalie to tie the game. The third came short handed when Brad Moxness made a perfect pass to Randklev who went top shelf to take the lead. 2nd period ended 4 – 3 Fergus Falls. In the third it was all Zero Variance as they posted 7 goals in the period. The first came when Logan Wentworth moved the puck out to the top of the point and Mason Hoffman’s ripped one past the goalie. Northern Lakes scored next, and then Wentworth beat the defenders to score his first goal. Longtin’s hard shot from the face off circle found the back of the net, followed by Randklev notching his 4th goal of the game with an assist to Moxness. Johnson scored a beautiful goal with an assist to Wentworth, followed up with a nice wrap around goal by Jakob Brimhall and Wentworth scored the final goal with :48 left in the game for a final score of 11 to 4 Zero Variance. Moorhead scored again in the first then with 1:44 left in the period a hard effort staying with the puck by Declan Young resulted in a goal as the puck, Declan, a Moorhead defender and the goalie all ended up in the net. 1st period ended 2 – 2. In the second Moorhead added two more goals and another one in the third and the game ended 5 – 2. Luhning made 26 saves in goal. FF Bantam A team takes 2 on weekend

The Fergus Falls VFW Post #612 Bantam “A” hockey team opened the season with a two-game home stand this weekend, hunting for two important wins against two district opponents, Northern Lakes and Little Falls. Both contests ended with the Otters tagging a victory.

In Friday night’s matchup against Northern Lakes, the Otters were dominant yet found themselves down by one goal with 5:04 remaining in the first period. Relentless physical play along the boards along with strong back checking by Fergus Falls quickly began to wear down their opponent. Jack Nathe (assisted by Camden Andrews), tied the game late in the period on a power play goal. Tyler Hobbs (assisted by Tosten Mann, Nathe) scored on a rebound to put Fergus Falls up 2-1 heading into the second period. Fergus Falls ended the period going two-for-two on power play opportunities.

With Northern Lakes skating with a one-man advantage early in the second period, Peter Johnson found the net on a short-handed breakaway resulting from a great pass by Mann. Johnson added another power play goal, (assisted by Mann and Corey Ward), at the 8:01 mark to put Fergus Falls by a score of 4-1. Corey Ward (assisted by Adam Swanson and Mann) answered a subsequent Northern Lakes power play goal with a blazing wrist shot from the left side, beating the Northern Lakes goaltender high-right and giving the Otters a 5-2 lead leading into the final period.

Ward’s (unassisted) quick shot off of a face off made it 6-2 early in the third. Rylie Sheridan’s shot from the point gave the Otters a five goal lead with 13:45 to play. Tosten Mann summarized his outstanding team play by tallying his fifth assist for the game. Jack Nathe kept the opponent on their heels, scoring on an unassisted breakaway midway through the period. Nathe (assisted by Hobbs, Sheridan) added an exclamation point twenty two seconds later, resulting in a hat trick for Nathe and a 9-3 victory for the home team.

Fergus Falls held a 48-9 shots-on-goal advantage for the game.

The Fergus Falls Bantam “A’s” went head-to-head against a physical Little Falls team Saturday afternoon hoping to carry momentum from the previous game. After a scoreless opening period and a slow start, Tosten Mann gave his team a 1-0 lead (assisted by Brady Kampsula, P. Johnson) with 7:34 remaining in the second period. Mann added a short-handed goal (assisted by Nathe) on a hard slap shot from the left point to put the Otters up 2-0. Early in the third period, Peter Johnson skated in hard from the right and buried a backhand for a 3-0 lead. Fergus Falls Otter goaltender Derek Christianson played a huge part in the contest by holding Little Falls scoreless on 39 shots-on-goal while making several great saves. Christianson was awarded a well-deserved shutout and the Otters were awarded a hard-earned 3-0 win.

Members of the 2012 Fergus Falls Bantam “A” hockey team are Derek Christianson, Brady Kampsula, Dyson Thacker, Nick Johnson, Peter Johnson, Tosten Mann, Jack Nathe, Tyler Hobbs, Corey Ward, Rylie Sheridan, and Camden Andrews. The Otters are coached by head coach Mike Schwarz and assistant coaches Mac Abel and Tom Mann.

The Bantam “A” hockey team, parents and fans would like to extend a special thanks to the Fergus Falls VFW Post #612 for their sponsorship of this year’s team.
