A new place to shop for old things [UPDATED]
Published 10:27am Monday, December 3, 2012 Updated 12:32pm Monday, December 3, 2012Specializing in the style of “a bit used” chic, Unique Antique Furniture Boutique of Fergus Falls opened last week.
The antique store has been a local favorite in Alexandria for years, and owners David and Laura Hansen recently decided to expand to downtown Fergus Falls next to Mauk Jewelers.
In order to find success in business, David believes in a simple philosophy.
“If you have nice stuff, and you have good service, people will come,” he said.
Unique Antique Furniture Boutique carries furniture, home decor and much more.
“The unique home decor is high quality like you might find at Pier 1,” David said. “We have things at extremely low prices. You’re getting the quality of a big-time store in a small environment.”
One of the advantages to having two stores is the ability to rotate inventory, said David.
“This is not your average store,” he said. “Things change on a weekly basis. We will bring in four or five pieces of furniture every week, and we can help find things for people.”
David said everything in the store is unique. Each piece has been selected for a purpose and many items have been customized or painted. Many of the pieces within the store have come from auctions or estate sales.
The store is open on the main floor and upstairs level, but David said he would like to open the basement as well.
David and Laura are currently operating the business with the help of family members, but David said he would eventually like to take on a few employees.
“We will have to get off the ground first to see what is going to be needed for local help,” he said.
Unique Antique Furniture Boutique opened its doors on Saturday, Nov. 24, but the business will have a grand opening in January after the holidays are over, said David.
Even while Laura and David were setting up the store, passers by were stopping in to see what the new business was all about. David said he has been pleased with the way he and his wife have been welcomed into Fergus Falls.
“It has been impressive,” he said. “It has been a fabulous, fabulous reception.”
