Aho takes 1st at Unruh Invite

WAHPETON, N.D. — The Fergus Falls wrestling team opened their season Friday and Saturday at the 15th annual Dan Unruh Invitational and saw 120 pounder Abbot Aho pick up a first place finish.

Aho started the day with a first round bye, but quickly picked up a quarter final win as he pinned Devils Lake’s Jace Estenson at 2:30 in the first round.

In the semi-final round, Aho won a major decision over Tracer Lee of Border West 18-6, before picking up another major decision 13-3 over Juan Rodriguez of West Fargo.

The major decision saw Aho tie the school record held by Mitch Gabrielson.

Fergus’ Tyler Giza was able to pick up a consolation win in the 132 lb. class. Giza defeated Mark Erickson (pin), but fell to Jordan Ketter of Frazee(8-6) in the quarter finals. Giza was able to battle back, winning two matches to setup a rematch with Ketter in the consolation championship. This time Giza got the better of Ketter, defeating him 5-1.

Ben Schindler (126), Dane Rinquist (152), Gus Makovsky (182) and Abram Aho (195) all took fourth place finishes at the meet.

The Otters finished fifth as a team scoring 129 points, while West Fargo( 290) took home first and Frazee (218) captured runner-up honors.

In the JV tournament , Tyler Adam and Simon Hoffbeck won their weight class. Winning one match each was Seth Langbehn and Joe McKeever.

The Otters will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Sauk Rapids to take on Central Lakes Conference opponents the Storm and St. Cloud Apollo Eagle in a triangular beginning at 5 p.m.
