Spartans stall Otters
Published 10:21am Monday, December 3, 2012Three first period Spartan goals propelled the visitors over the Fergus Falls girls hockey team 4-2 Saturday.
Simley got on the board early in the first as Laken Muller flipped in a goal off a Nikki Nelson pass. The Spartans would add another goal this time unassisted by Lexi Muller.
The Otters were able to make some noise later in the period as Lauren Norgren buried a Sydney Kuehl pass into the Simley net for a power play goal. The Spartans would respond with their own power play goal as Ann Heinson gave Simley a 3-1 lead at the end of first period.
The Otters would cut the lead to one goal in the second period as Norgren notched her second goal of the game with assists by Megan Niblock and Annie Magnusson.
Simley would put the game on ice midway through the final period as a Muller to Muller connection, Laken to Lexi, would give the Spartans their fourth goal of the game.
“Shots after the first period were 13-5 in our favor, but we still found ourselves down 3-1,” Otter coach Matt Koalska said. “That’s a tough way to start a game. The girls were not prepared and did not have a lot of energy, it was pretty quiet on the bench and on the ice.”
Jordie Salwei was in net for Fergus and turned away 23 shots, while Simley’s Emma Tschida blocked 22.
The Otters will look to bounce back Tuesday as they travel to take on Central Lakes Conference foe Willmar in a 7:15 p.m. match up.
