Council approves 2013 tax levy, budget [UPDATED]

The Fergus Falls City Council approved the 2013 budget, and property taxes are set to increase by 11.4 percent.

Much of the property tax levy change is due to the construction of the new public safety facility, which will account for more than 9 percent of the increase.

The rest of the bump will come from small increases to the budget for city employee wages, equipment and other slight increases in a variety of areas.

While 11.4 percent could be looked at as a substantial increase, this is 3.6 percent less than the preliminary budget approved by the council in September.

A taxpayer with an $80,000 home will pay about $41 more in 2013 than 2012.

• $100,000 home – $51 increase

• $125,000 home – $64 increase

• $150,000 home – $76 increase

• $200,000 home – $102 increase
