Auto dealer supports Hillcrest fundraiser

Students from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy thanked Nelson Auto Center in Fergus Falls Tuesday for helping to provide valuable insights that change how they think about life.

Because of proceeds from a Nelson Auto Center “Drive One 4 UR School” fundraiser, students had the resources needed for a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

On Oct. 6, Nelson Auto Center and Hillcrest Academy teamed up for the test drive fundraising event Drive One 4 UR School. For every valid test drive at the event Ford Motor Company donated $20 to Hillcrest Academy up to $6,000. The Ford Drive One 4 UR School program was developed as a fun, engaging way to help high schools raise money to support their sports and extracurricular activities.

Nelson Auto Center supplied 13 vehicles and drivers for the event and Hillcrest raised nearly $3,400.

In recent years, partnerships have been created between Hillcrest and two schools in the Dominican Republic — the Santa Fe Primary School and the El Brisol Primary School, in San Pedro.

23 high school seniors, with 10 adult chaperones, spent six days in the Dominican Republic during Thanksgiving week, ministering in various villages and schools.

Funds from the “Drive One 4 UR School” event went toward the purchase of new doors and windows for the El Brisol Primary School facility, where last year the mission team constructed a new roof. Meals were also provided from the funds to feed the students at that school. The remaining balance was spent providing meals for a Haitian village located in a sugar cane field.

Hillcrest students noted an obvious contrast between the poverty of those they encountered and their own personal wealth and daily blessings that are easily taken for granted. They spoke of their own fears being replaced by confidence, and a joy that came to them while they served others in humility.
