Otter boys struggle against Little Falls

The Fergus Falls boys basketball team could not hold a slim first half lead as they suffered their first loss of the season to the Little Falls Flyers Tuesday 80-60.

The Otters jumped out to an early 12-5 run, but saw the Flyers regain the lead as they nailed nine first half three pointers. Fergus was able to recover and snuck into the locker room at the break with a 38-37 lead.

Little Falls came out in the second half and tested the Otter guards to beat them, which proved to be a great defensive strategy as the Otters struggled to get their offense going. The Flyers continued their three point assault and made several free throws, being in double bonus most of the half , to pick up the win.

“We didn’t get good ball movement in the second half and that was largely due to the great pressure defense by Little Falls,” Otter coach Dave Rund said. “Great teams respond after a loss like this and we will need to see how this team plans to respond.”

Mike Millard led the Otter boys with 17 points, while Austin Rund and Jackson McAllister each added 13 tallies in the loss.

The Fergus Falls JV and ninth grade teams both had better luck in their outings as the JV recorded a 39-39 win, while the ninth grade took home a 62-41 win.

The JV’s Brett Salvesen scored a team high eight points, while ninth-graders Jaden Banks (16), Matthew Monke (14) and Jake Western (10) all were in double figures.

The Otters will hope home court advantage will fix their early season missteps as they host the Breckenridge Cowboys Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
