Otters, Cards skate to tie
Published 10:34am Wednesday, December 5, 2012The Fergus Falls boys hockey team was able to put 44 shots on net in a home game against Willmar on Tuesday, but it would not be enough as the game ended in a tie.
Hunter Schneider was able to tally a hat trick for the Cardinals sparking a comback after a 3-1 defecit early in the second. The Otters, on the other hand, spread out the scoring with five different players able to put one in the back of the net.
Jesse Ketonen of the Otters scored the lone goal late in the first period as Fergus Falls started off strong outshooting the Cardinals 14-1.
The second period was a different story, as Schneider tied things up just 47 seconds into the period. Fergus rebounded quickly when Joe Nathe scored less than two minutes later to put the Otters on top once again. Sam Rausch added another goal quickly to put the Otters up 3-1. The Cardinals wouldn’t quit, as they scored twice before the period ended to knot things up at three.
The third period went back and forth between both teams. Adam Evenson started things three minutes and fifteen seconds into the period, but Willmar would not be denied, quickly tying the game at four. Colton Buseth would score the next goal, which gave the Otters a lead that would hold until five minutes left in the game. A goal by the Cardinals would bring the game to its final 5-5 mark as overtime proved to be undeciding.
“We got off to a strong start and were very good defensively. Our players were able to get a lot of shots on net.” said Coach Donaghue.
The Otters will take on Little Falls Friday at 7 p.m. in Little Falls.
