Astrid Heyen, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, after a courageous battle against cancer. Her relationships with family and friends gave her the greatest joy, and she will be greatly missed for the joy she brought to their lives.

Astrid Ingebord Heyen (Rostad, Sherbrooke) was born Aug. 14, 1931. She attended schools in Underwood and Pelican Rapids and was a graduate of Pelican Rapids High School. Her marriage to Harold Sherbrooke was blessed with four surviving children.

She later married Lloyd Heyen.

Astrid worked at the local telephone company for more than three decades.

Faith, family, and friends were the focus of Astrid’s life.

Astrid attained friendships with young and old through her warmth and her welcoming and accepting words and deeds; she maintained close relationships with immediate and extended family and friends life-long.

She especially enjoyed being a part of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives.

Astrid was renowned for her flower gardening and was recently featured in a local Press article for a record 27 blossoms on one Asian lily plant — although she had a greater passion for roses.

She enjoyed her cat, Izzy, volunteering at church, the school library, senior center, and baking goodies, including Norwegian specialties, for others.

In addition to flower gardening, Astrid enjoyed caring for birds, especially hummingbirds, and playing cards with friends.

Astrid is survived by her husband, Lloyd, her four children, Harold (Linda) Sherbrooke of Walker, Carolyne (Jim) New of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Georgine Popham of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Pamela (David) Nustad of Detroit Lakes; five step-children, Duane, Dennis, Richard, Paula, and Darla; four grandchildren, Chad, Angie, Matt, and Hannah, and four great-grandchildren, Sarah, Tiffany, Jerzie, and Jaze.

Astrid was preceded in death by a son, Cal Allen; brothers, Herbert, Kenneth and Wilford, sister, Margaret Olson, brother-in-law, Leonard Olson, and sister-in-law, Olive Rostad.
