A strong first half started to dwindled into a 70-65 loss for the M State Women’s basketball team as the nationally ranked Northland Pioneers took home a victory.

The Spartans were able to catch the Pioneers by surprise in the first half as they left from the locker room up 35-20.

Northland was able to find their spark in the second half as they scored 50 points in a night that saw the Pioneers finish with 50 percent shooting from the field.

“Sometimes it would be better just not to have a halftime and today was just the type of game,” Spartan coach Brenda Johnson said.

Aria Walstad had a great day for the Spartans as she scored 12 points off four three-point shots and had 10 assists for a double-double. Rhoda Christenson led the Lady Spartans with 17 tallies.

M State is 3-5 on the season and will now travel to Brainerd Friday to take part in the Central Lakes Classic.
