Comets shoot past TigersPublished 10:52am Wednesday, December 12, 2012
ROTHSAY — The Hillcrest boys basketball team picked up a much needed early season victory over Little Eight Conference opponent Rothsay Tigers as the Comets held on late for the 75-65 victory.
Hillcrest came out of the gates looking to prove a slow 0-2 start was just a few unlucky bounces as they jumped out to an early double digit lead.
The hosting Tigers would not lay down in front of their home crowd as they stormed back late in the half to leave the court at the break down 32-25.
In the second half, the Comets continued to play stifling defense and held a 21 point lead with six minutes left to play.
Rothsay was able to take advantage of Hillcrest seeming to coast the rest of the way as they dropped in 25 points to cut the lead to 10.
The Tigers rally was too late as the Comets took home the victory.
Daniel Nersten led the Comets in scoring for the third consecutive game as he dropped in 32 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and had five steals in the victory.
Teammates Calveti Nyabingi (19) and Jake Isaac (13) were also in double figures.
The Tigers saw a more evenly spaced scoring effort as Dexter Aaberg (16), Logan Moen (13) Brett Brenden (13) and Noah Brenden (10) were all in double digits.
The Comets will look to ride the momentum from the win into Thursday’s home game against another LEC opponent in Battle Lake at 7:30 p.m.
The Tigers will be watching this game closely as Rothsay will have a break until they play the Battlers on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
