Despite a strong second half showing, the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Comets fell to the Battle Lake Battlers 68 to 61 at a boys basketball showdown in Fergus Falls Thursday.

The Battlers got off to a fast start, going on an early 13–1 run, but the Comets fought back, scoring the last six points of the half. The score read 33 to 23 in favor of Battle Lake at the midway point.

Hillcrest continued to heat up in the second half and even pulled within four at one point, but the Comets eventually crashed into the ground, falling short by seven.

Calveti Nyabingi led the Comet offense, hitting 12 from the field and dropping a few free throws for a total of 27 points. Daniel Nersten was one of the defensive leaders for the Comets, bringing down nine rebounds and picking up one steal.

Battle Lake moved the ball around and spread out the scoring. Micha Rogness recorded 20 ticks from the post position, and Petric VanErp accounted for 16 of the Battlers’ 68 points.

Battler Tyler Ukkelberg also helped bring the Comets down to earth, coming away with 13 rebounds, eight points and six assists.

The loss brings the Comets to 3–1 on the year. Hillcrest will look for their second win of the season when they take on Parkers Prairie at home Thursday.
